Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
What are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
HBCUs are institutions established prior to 1964 with the principal mission of educating Black Americans. HBCUs have played a vital role in providing access to higher education, fostering leadership, and promoting social and economic advancement for historically marginalized communities. Today, HBCUs continue to be centers of academic excellence, cultural heritage, and community engagement.
Why HBCUs Matter in Mental Health:
- Increase diversity in the mental health workforce.
- Expand culturally informed care for marginalized communities.
- Foster leadership and research addressing mental health disparities.
HBCU Strategic Initiative Overview
The HBCU Strategic Initiative, led by AAMFT, aims to establish the first COAMFTE-accredited Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program at an HBCU. This historic effort will help to diversify the mental health workforce, expand culturally responsive care, and strengthen mental health services in historically marginalized communities.
