Beyond the Breaking Point: Tactics for Tackling Client Burnout

In this presentation, we will dive into the topic of burnout and its impact on mental health, particularly focusing on how therapists can support clients who are experiencing or on the verge of burnout due to their work or caregiver status. Burnout, often overlooked or dismissed, can significantly deteriorate one's well-being and lead to more severe mental health issues if left unmanaged. Through this session, we will explore practical strategies and approaches therapists can employ to assist clients in navigating through burnout, fostering resilience, and reclaiming a sense of balance and self-compassion.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the Reality of Burnout: Gain insight into the nature of burnout, recognizing its prevalence across various demographics. Participants will grasp the nuances of burnout and its impact on clients' lives and mental health.
  2. Learn Therapeutic Strategies: Explore effective therapeutic strategies tailored to address burnout, including workplace coping mechanisms, setting realistic expectations, and fostering self-compassion.
  3. Empower Clients and Encourage Self-Reflection: Guide clients towards recognizing their own strengths, successes, and limitations amidst burnout. Encourage self-reflection and exploration of coping mechanisms, career considerations, and self-compassion practices.

Addressing Suicide among LGBTQ+ Youth

CE credits: 1 Speaker: Judy Russon

Suicide is a growing public health issue among adolescents and young adults. Due to discrimination, stigma, and experiences of rejection, LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately affected by suicide. While the majority of LGBTQ+ youth are healthy, resilient and have strong support systems, many experience significant distress without support. The purpose of this webinar is to provide family therapists with an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to approach this clinical population with a balance of sensitivity, humility, and self-assuredness. First, two theories will be presented to explain the disproportionate rates of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. Next, a brief review of prominent risk and protective factors will be described. Finally, treatment approaches, designed or adapted for LGBTQ+ youth, will be discussed and illustrated with case examples. Special attention will be paid to systemic models targeting suicidality.

Adolescent and Family Therapy: Evidence Based Treatment

CE Credits: 4.50 Speaker(s): Howard A. Liddle, EdD Therapists often view evidence-based therapies with skepticism or trepidation. Some consider these approaches as irrelevant to real world clinical work. Addressing these issues head-on and in a practical way, this presentation describes a modular approach to understanding and using an evidence-based treatment. Using a new training video, the presentation illustrates the four core modules of multidimensional family therapy (MDFT), an evidence-based approach for adolescents. We cover the needed knowledge base, change theory, clinical methods, and desirable during-treatment processes within the adolescent, parent, family, and extrafamilial modules of MDFT.

At home Series: Historical Trauma Theory

CE: 1.00
Speakers: Do Hee Kim and Jonathan Appel

Interpersonal and intergenerational neurobiology can illuminate the development of emotional health within a social and cultural context. In recent years, Historical Trauma Theory has proposed that populations historically subjected to long-term, mass trauma—(such as slavery, war, genocide, and other forms of social oppression) exhibit a higher prevalence of health issues even across several generations removed from the original trauma(s). Understanding how historical trauma might influence the current mental health status of racial/ethnic populations may provide new directions and insights for understanding, treating and preventing mental health issues. This presentation will examine the model of Historical Trauma Theory and the research support to date. This framework will be applied to Family Therapy practice as well as research implications.
