Escape from Bickering DVD

This session, recorded in 1989 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally re-mastered in 2007, features Michael White conducting a live, unedited therapy session with a family. The featured family includes an 18-year-old institutionalized for fire-setting. Through circular strategic and reflexive questions and techniques of externalizing and mapping the influence of problems, the family is helped to discover new information about themselves. Concentration is on the bickering between siblings and the theme of protest that bonds the family to systems that patholize them. A reflecting team is used to consolidate the family’s “new story” which emerges in the session. Approx. Time: 134 minutes

CE Credits: 2.00 Speaker(s): Jennifer L. Hodgson, PhD; Tai J Mendenhall, PhD; Angela L. Lamson, PhD Working in a healthcare setting means applying your ethical principles in different ways. In fact, some professions are developing separate codes of ethics just for their members who are practicing in integrated behavioral health care settings. This workshop will compare and contrast the multidisciplinary codes of ethics commonly found in healthcare settings and highlight opportunities for shared understanding and possible differences. Case scenarios written by MFTs who have practiced in medical settings for years will highlight some of the potential challenges and lessons learned.

Exploring Experiences of Diversity and Multiculturalism

CE: 4.00
Speaker: Jennifer Torres

Part 1: Social inequalities result in health disparities, relational conflict, and assaults to personal dignity. These experiences influence the lives of therapists and clients who come from diverse contexts and enter a space of healing together. This webinar will explore how larger systems of power impact the therapeutic relationship and influence the interactions that take place in the clinical context. Participants will develop an awareness for the cultural differences that influence the lived experiences of both therapists and their clients.

Part 2: After understanding how experiences of power, privilege, and oppression affect the clinical relationship, participants will learn how to implement interventions that are culturally sensitive and responsive. Additionally, participants will explore the complex ethical issues and challenges that become salient when delivering interventions from a culturally-informed lens. Participants will learn how to integrate a multicultural perspective into their practice, and engage with clients from a social justice-oriented framework.
