The Fundamentals of Marriage and Family Therapy Supervision
Dale Blumen, M.S.

This popular 30-hour intensive program is designed to fulfill the complete course requirement for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation, and satisfies the supervisory training requirements for many state laws. 

 

 

 

 

Participants will:

  • review the major models of MFT supervision and consider common factors in supervision.
  • address the co-evolving therapist-client and supervisor relationships.
  • learn to evaluate stages of supervision and address any problems that can emerge.
  • survey a variety of supervisory modalities and interventions from case presentations to reflecting teams.
  • examine the impact of contextual variables on the supervisory system.
  • expand their ethical and legal knowledge of the supervisory context.
  • consider the potential benefits and problems of using technology in supervision.
  • discuss the requirements for supervising applicants for AAMFT membership.
  • be introduced to the supervision mentoring process.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to articulate a beginning philosophy of supervision that reflects their preferred personal model of supervision, their choices of supervisory modalities, as well as their preferred supervisory roles.

This interactive Institute includes a variety of exercises and group discussions and prepares participants to supervise in a variety of therapy settings including private practice, agencies, and academia. There are significant required readings prior to the Institute. Also, written assignments must be satisfactorily completed after the course in order to receive a certificate of completion. Information regarding required readings will be provided with registration materials.

Course Schedule:

Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 4:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Thursday, March 4, 8:00 a.m. – noon, 1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Friday, March 5, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, March 6, 8:00 a.m. – noon, 1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, March 7, 8:00 a.m. – noon, 1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

This course provides 30 hours of continuing education and meets the course requirement for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation.

Dale Blumen, M.S. is an AAMFT Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor, has taught Approved Supervisor courses since 1995 in Rhode Island and at AAMFT Institutes.  Ms. Blumen is a past president of the Rhode Island Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a member of the Rhode Island Board of Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists.  For the past twenty years, she has supervised therapists working toward state MFT licensure and mentored numerous candidates for the Approved Supervisor designation. Ms. Blumen currently supervises and teaches graduate students in the COAMFTE accredited Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Rhode Island, where she has served as Coordinator of the Family Therapy Clinic since 1987.
