The Fundamentals of Marriage and Family Therapy Supervision
Dale G. Blumen, M.S.

This popular 30-hour intensive program is designed to fulfill the complete course requirement for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation, and satisfies the supervisory training requirements for many state laws.

Participants will:

  • review the major models of MFT supervision from the historical approaches to postmodern.
  • address the co-evolving therapist-client and supervisor relationships.
  • learn to evaluate all stages of supervision and address any problems that emerge.
  • survey a variety of supervisory methods and interventions from case presentations to reflecting teams.
  • understand the intersecting social identities of clients, therapists, and supervisors on supervision.
  • expand their ethical and legal knowledge of the supervisory context.
  • consider the potential benefits and problems of using technology in supervision.
  • discuss the requirements for supervising applicants for AAMFT membership.
  • be introduced to the issues involved in supervision mentoring.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to articulate a beginning philosophy of supervision that reflects their preferred theoretical model(s), values, methods, and style.

This interactive Institute will include a variety of exercises, group discussions, and observations of supervision.  Each participant’s expertise and experiences will be incorporated into, and will enhance, the training. This course will prepare participants to supervise in a wide variety of therapy settings including private practice, agencies, and academia.  There are significant required readings and a written assignment prior to the Institute. Also, a written personal philosophy of supervision paper must be satisfactorily completed after the course in order to receive a certificate of completion.  Information regarding required readings and costs of textbooks will be provided with registration materials.

Course Schedule:
