This workshop provides a unifying model of sex, intimacy, psychological maturation and systemic interaction underlying common sexual problems. Learn effective tools for determining physical, emotional and systemic causes of sexual dysfunction. Discussion of Crucible® therapy will emphasize sex as a window into who clients really are, and developing skill of working with clients around sexual issues.

Practical and Ethical Issues in Family Psychoeducation

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the practical and ethical challenges faced by clinicians and organizations implementing family psychoeducation. Family psychoeducation can significantly reduce psychiatric symptoms and the concomitant stress experienced by family members, but by its very nature it involves practical and ethical issues requiring a careful balance of the needs of identified clients, families, and clinicians.

A Model for Changing Relational Schema of Abused Children

Relational schemes are organized sets of beliefs and expectations about relationships based on early life experiences. If caretakers have been abusive, children experience rejection and distrust. Research has shown that children organize, select and distort experiences based on existing schemes. Presenters demonstrate via videotaped case examples how to integrate cognitive behavioral and experiential techniques to modify dysfunctional relational schemes.

How do you handle secrets in couple therapy? Learn from literature and findings of a recent study of MFTs’ policies, practices and perspectives regarding the handling of secrets. Ethical, legal and moral considerations impacting confidentiality, disclosure and informed consent will be considered regarding secrets such as infidelity, divorce, paternity and HIV/AIDS. Case scenarios with group discussion will be utilized.

Adherence Scales in Supervision to Create Therapeutic Focus

This workshop will introduce participants to the ecosystemic structural family therapy model’s supervisor and treatment adherence scales. The use of adherence scales in supervision will be explored as a means to help therapists contain anxiety and maintain an intentional therapeutic posture with families. The incorporation of adherence scales into the supervisory process will be demonstrated through videotaped case material.

The Issues and Ethics of Using Technology to Provide Therapy

Distance therapy is an innovative approach to delivering mental health care that can be especially helpful in reaching underserved populations. Through this workshop, participants will explore seven issues that should be considered when deciding to use technology as a primary treatment medium. Examples will be provided from the presenter’s experience with distance therapy.

Parenting Coordination: Ethical Land Mines

Using state statutory guidelines, licensure board ethical guidelines, the AAMFT Code of Ethics, state mental health laws, and HIPAA as a foundation, participants will explore the ethical constraints MFTs must use in the practice of court-ordered parenting coordination. Challenging cases will be explored for creative ethical solutions within MFT techniques using recommended practice guidelines developed by one AAMFT division.

Surviving the Family Backlash with Verbal Aikido

Individuals often face the daunting task of expressing differentness without abandoning their families. A reaction or backlash is to be expected. This workshop will teach skills that help people maintain independence without damaging relationships. Exercises, role-plays, and brain storming will reveal a verbal Aikido that is immediately applicable for sibling conflicts, oppressive spouses, parents, and in-laws.

SUPERVISION TRACK: Supervision Mentoring and Training for AAMFT Clinical Membership

This interactive workshop is part of the supervision track for the conference. It fulfills the interactive portion of the AAMFT requirements for the Approved Supervisor designation. Participants will engage in learning activities that include lecture and group discussion related to learning objectives 6 and 9: “Address distinctive issues that arise during supervision mentoring” and “Be aware of the requirements and procedures for supervising trainees for AAMFT Clinical Membership.”

Creating and Maintaining Moral Space at the Table of Diversity

How does one make space at the table of diversity without giving up her seat? We must be prepared to respectfully interact with other mental health stakeholders who hold views differing from our own cherished convictions. This workshop will introduce conceptual tools for sorting through debates and wrestling with how therapists’ own moral perspectives relate to professional standards about diversity.
