Long Beach, California

Long Beach, California

Long Beach located in the heart of Southern California, approximately 25 miles south of the city of Los Angeles, on the Pacific Ocean.  The temperature averages 74 degrees Fahrenheit year round with about 345 average days of sunshine.  Originally named “Wilmore City”, in 1888 the city was renamed Long Beach because of the 5 1/2 miles of clean, sandy beaches.  You can walk, run, bike or blade on the smooth, fully paved bike path that spans the length of the beach from Downtown to Belmont Shore. Or enjoy an array of watersports such as swimming, sailing, kayaking, or jet skiing.  Here are several other ways to spend your free time in Long Beach:

The Queen Mary
The Queen Mary has been docked as the historic centerpiece of Long Beach Harbor since 1967. Although it is still afloat and even moves up and down with the tides, it no longer functions as a passenger ship. It’s true that several people have claimed to encounter strange and unusual sites while on the Queen Mary. With almost seventy years of history as a luxury liner, WWII troop-ship, and now hotel and attraction, the Queen Mary has several stories within her steel walls.

Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific
The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific is home to only two whales... full-scale replicas of the world’s largest mammal, the Blue Whale, which hang in the Aquarium’s main hall. Although the Aquarium is currently not home to live whales or dolphins, over 12,000 other marine animals do call it home. Its residents include seals, sea lions, bat rays, sharks, bass, sea dragons, and much, much more.

Arts & Culture
In Long Beach there is a world-class arts and cultural exhibition that complement the spectacular seaside locale. Catch a musical masterpiece at the waterside Long Beach Performing Arts Center, home to the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Long Beach Opera and International City Theater. Enjoy a million-dollar ocean view atop the bluffs at the Long Beach Museum of Art, housed in a historic Craftsman mansion and featuring an acclaimed museum café and gift shop. Immerse yourself in the dynamic culture of the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA), or explore the eclectic East Village Arts District.

Nightlife
Long Beach after dark is a world like no other--filled with scintillating salsa, sultry jazz, classic rock n’ roll and some of the leading sounds on the alternative scene. From Latin clubs to jazz and cigar lounges, Long Beach offers something to light up everyone’s night.

Recreation
In Long Beach, the great outdoors is right at your doorstep. Cruise 5.5 miles of breathtaking waterfront by bicycle, blade or foot and enjoy everything that makes the Southern California surf and sand famous. Jet skis, kayaks, boats, wind surfboards and more are all just a rental away to help you conquer the waterways and enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the coast.

Restaurants
Welcome to a food lover’s paradise. Long Beach is jeweled with a vast world of great food, exotic dining and memorable restaurants. You will find more than 100 quality restaurants within an eight-block radius in downtown, serving everything from hot wings to haute cuisine. Explore the city and delight your taste buds at every turn or browse the extensive list of local and international favorites listed here.

Shopping
Traveling is like one big treasure hunt, you never know where you’ll find that cool little gadget, the exceptional artwork, the perfect gift for that special person or the unexpected discovery that you can’t live without. Shopping in Long Beach takes that experience to a whole new level; brimming with extraordinary specialty shops, colorful bazaars, trendy fashion stores and hip furniture stops--this is a shopping paradise! From the downtown menagerie to Fourth Street’s funky flair and Second Street’s boutique shops in Belmont Shore to serious outdoor shopping destinations all over the city, Long Beach offers everything under the sun.
