Membership Categories

Over 24,500 family therapists, practitioners, educators, researchers, and students have made a commitment to support the AAMFT's mission through AAMFT Membership.  AAMFT Members live in the United States and throughout the world.  AAMFT Members work in a variety of settings such as independent practice, academia, agencies, hospitals, EAPs, and schools.  While the practices are diverse, AAMFT Members share a common belief that relationships matter, and that family therapists can help strengthen relationships and individual's health and well-being.  Following are the four AAMFT Membership Categories.

Clinical Membership
Clinical Members of the AAMFT are licensed marriage and family therapists.  If your state/province does not license marriage and family therapist, we offer an evaluative track application process.

Associate Membership

Associate Members have earned graduate degrees in marriage and family therapy or a related mental health discipline, and are working on the clinical hours required for MFT licensure and AAMFT Clinical Membership.  If your state/province does not license marriage and family therapist, we offer an evaluative track application process.

Student Membership
Student Members are currently enrolled in a graduate or post-degree training program that can be reasonably expected to lead towards an MFT license and AAMFT Clinical Membership.

Affiliate Membership
Affiliate Membership signifies a commitment to staying up-to-date on the latest research, news, and clinical developments in the marriage and family therapy profession.  It is the ideal membership opportunity for the mental health professional who wants to connect with the MFT profession, but does not want to pursue MFT licensure or Clinical Membership.  This membership category is non-clinical; therefore, the AAMFT does not review the credentials of applicants.
