Background and Facts on Threatening Email Sent to AAMFT President-Elect

Background and Facts on Threatening Email Sent to AAMFT President-Elect

On January 27, 2010, at 1:37 p.m., an email was sent to AAMFT President-Elect Linda Metcalf’s personal email address. With the subject line:  "Good afternoon," it read as follows:

“Since you are part of the problem and has (sic) been getting financial gains from the present administration, you will be next.”

Following that text was one of the letters that contained distorted information and unfounded personal attacks on the AAMFT Executive Director, listing several signatories collectively identified as “The Call for Change Coordinating Group.”   The header and beginning portion of the email follows:

From: petergaribaldi@aol.com
Sent: Jan 27, 2010 1:37 PM
To: dr_linda@ix….
Subject: Good Afternoon

Since you are part of the problem and has been getting financial gains from the present administration, you will be next.

OPEN LETTER TO THE AAMFT BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FROM MFTs for Change

(Remainder of copy omitted)

Statement from the call for change:

The call for change group has denied any knowledge of or involvement in the sending of that email.  Further, a member of the “coordinating group” has stated: "The threatening letter "he" wrote...I can assure you that it did not come from someone within CFC. Having spent many hours strategizing, brainstorming, communing with the Call For Change, I can assure you that the integrity within the CFC is beyond reproach-even behind closed doors.”

The Facts:

  1. Members of the cfc have openly discussed using public intimidation and threats to AAMFT Board members as part of a strategy to accomplish their purposes.  While some objected to this tactic, others have validated some of these ideas.

  2. The individual who has been most aggressive in his statements about use of intimidation has been invited to serve in a consultancy or committee leadership role in the cfc.

These facts can be documented by AAMFT.  The statement above, that “the integrity within the CFC is beyond reproach-even behind closed doors,” is demonstrably false.  There are numerous posts from the cfc listserve in AAMFT’s possession that directly discuss using threat and intimidation against AAMFT Board members as a tactic.  It is clear that these tactics have been discussed as part of an overall strategy by the group.

AAMFT wishes to be circumspect and thoughtful in its disclosures.  At the same time, it is imperative for AAMFT members that sufficient information be shared so the context and content of cfc communications that the Board must take into account consider may be known to you.

Emails that have been forwarded to AAMFT from the cfc listserve that document these facts can be reviewed by clicking: Excerpts From Emails Regarding Use of Intimidation
