Dynamics of Addiction Treatment and Recovery
Presented by Meri L. Shadley, PhD, MFT-S, LCADC-S
Alcoholism, drug abuse, compulsive gambling, and other behavioral disorders such as sexual compulsivity, persistent shopping, and internet obsession have a common thread - they all not only interfere with an individual's healthy living, but they impact the life of family members. Many families are left devastated and dramatically altered. Marriage and family therapists bring a perspective uniquely different than the typical substance abuse treatment orientation. In an effort to wed our systems views with more manualized protocols presently utilized, this course will introduce a systemic framework. Attendees will receive an overview of addiction specific theories, techniques, and strategies and receive an opportunity to relate this information to families suffering from the increasing problems of disordered gambling, internet addiction, and other behavioral compulsions.
Therapeutic Artistry: Finding Your Creative Edge with Your Most Difficult Couple and Family Practice Situations
Presented by Matthew D. Selekman, MSW, LCSE
At times in our professional careers, all of us have been faced with clinical situations in which we were intimidated by or experienced therapeutic paralysis in reaction to particular clients' provocative and perplexing presenting problems and extensive treatment histories, families with multiple symptom-bearing members carrying serious DSM diagnoses, and couples and families who seem to thrive on one crisis to the next. In this hands-on, practice-oriented workshop, attendees will learn several effective ways therapists can tap the full range of their inner resources and creative selves for getting unstuck and being the catalysts for therapeutic change with complex and difficult client practice situations.
