Practice Description
*In my clinical practice of psychotherapy, I work with healthy individuals, couples, families and groups in New York City and Westport CT with emphases on family systems and life transitions. These include premarital education and counseling, divorce prevention and/or mediation, pregnancy--including the changes it brings to the family as well as the pregnant woman, twins, post-partum depression, Grandparenting in 21st century, living well after change or loss, menopause (as a Gateway!), grief, and spiritual crises.
My most recent book, Marrying Well: The clinicians' guide to premarital counseling, written with Elena Lesser Bruun and published by Norton, is also easily read and enjoyed by non-clinicians. It contains the new paradigm: The Eight Premarital Stages as well as easy-to-follow exercises that are helpful to couples in or out of therapy! I am very experienced working with adult children of divorce, and believe that they have been largely underserved in the face of all the "happy talk" about "good divorces" which overlooks the significant loss children experience when their family changes radically from one unit to two. Mediating conflict, I work with clients to achieve an understanding of themselves, each other, and the realities they face. In collaborative settings, I will work with clients and attorneys, as requested, to achieve understanding-based, non-adversarial goals when divorce is necessary.
In treatment, I educate clients about the systemic as well as individual changes that are experienced as new members enter or exit families and couples shift, needs change, triangles develop, people age and reach new life stages, and more. I help couples explore issues including: whre do you stand in the eight premarital stages and how to proceed?; the 'how to's' of blending the lives of two people into one family; the spiritual aspects of the mother/infant bond and its effect on the original couple, the husband and wife. Many of these emphases flow from my interests in working with families either to prevent divorce or to minimize the acrimony during divorce, with the intention of responsibly enhancing the well-being of, and ultimate outcome for, the child/children, as well as for the adults.
*As a Mediator and Executive Coach, I mediate conflict, explore systemic implications within organizations and their work force, and often serve as 'coach/consultant' to the CEO or other individual members of Senior Management. Together, we make it possible to enhance the productivity and interpersonal skills of key management and their team members in medical, corporate, and other business environments. This process parallels Family Systems therapies.
